The Spaces Between Buildings

Urban life is shaped as much by the spaces between buildings as by the buildings themselves. This chapter turns attention towards alleys, arcades, corridors, back lanes, setbacks, thresholds, drainage reserves, forecourts and other spaces commonly treated as secondary or residual. At ground level, these environments accommodate movement, trade, waiting, neighbourly interaction, play and informal livelihoods. The chapter shows how everyday appropriation can transform technically leftover spaces into social infrastructure, particularly where formal planning has not fully anticipated climatic, economic or community needs. Informality is not romanticised, since unmanaged occupation can generate obstruction, conflict and safety problems, but neither should it automatically be erased. Instead, the chapter proposes a Malaysian urban design language based on connectivity, climate, informality and participation. It distinguishes care from control: rather than simply fencing, clearing and standardising ambiguous spaces, urban design can support them through shade, lighting, seating, drainage, maintenance and negotiated use. These modest interventions can improve health, local economies, resilience and belonging, demonstrating that ordinary spaces often carry extraordinary importance in everyday urban life.
